People say that you will always remember your first year of marriage, maybe that is because you are just starting off and creating your new lives together, or maybe it is because you might be scraping by on a smaller income, and chances are you are not yet in your dream house. I would agree with that and I think that excitement of the first year is what we will look back on and remember. Our first two months of marriage seem to have flow by and when we hit the three month mark we will be getting ready to take off on our late honeymoon to Nicaragua. Now these two months have come with some struggles and it was with those struggles some fun memories were made.
Our first apartment together is great, it has giant windows with a city view including the top of the Bay Bridge and our local church. The building is a total of 6 floors with a nice rooftop deck including a fire pit- perfect for the cool summer nights we often get in San Francisco, a small gym with the necessities, and a grill, not to mention views of City Hall and the city buildings. However, there is a downside, our unit was lacking opening windows and was a constant 85-mid 90's even with four fans going 24/7. So we toughed out the heat for about four months (two before our wedding, and two after) our bodies slowly adapted to the temperature and we found that 82 degrees was nice -NOT GOOD. Well the fun part is we eventually began to get an AC unit installed, and on our day of installation there happened to also be a flood on the 6th floor, of course we live on the 6th floor so that isn't fun. Due to the flood we got to stay in a hotel, and what better hotel to pick than the one we had our reception at. So we packed up enough for two days and off we went, we were able to check in right away which was great because it was 11am and I had a suitcase, and my purse was busting at the seams with our electronic devices and Max's school book.
Max had to rush off to class but because our hotel had free happy hour from 4-6pm he made sure to be back in time to enjoy a drink or two before we went off to dinner, little did we know at the time that this was going to become our routine for the following 13 days. Being unprepared to stay in a hotel for that long is an understatement, and while we did have access to our apartment it was not much help, we had been gone the weekend before in Sacramento and had loads of laundry to do meaning we had a pretty limited selection, and because they had been doing AC installation in our room the morning of the flood all of our furniture was moved so we had limited access to our "closet" making it a fun two weeks of mixing and matching the few selected options we did have and a few last minute trips to target to get some things.
While we are back and slowly resettling into our tiny first "home" we are very much looking forward to our three week vacation and know that whatever we do not get around to doing before our flights will still be here when we get home and we can take the time to do it then. For now we are enjoying our temperature controlled unit, cuddling under our blankets, and packing for our trips.
